I Just Don’t ‘Get It’

I’ve always been apprehensive about anyone telling me a joke, for a variety of reasons, two of which come to mind today.

See, I don’t always ‘get it’. I’m one of those people who often laugh along with everyone else when the punch line is delivered, pretending that I thought the joke was hilarious, just hoping and praying that no one will ask me to explain it to them.

Because most often I just don’t get it.

I usually consider myself to be a witty person with a good sense of humor, but some of the jokes out there today are just beyond me. I don’t ‘get’ a lot of the jargon and slang, and I’m usually too self conscious to ask the joker to explain. When and if they do explain, it makes their joke fall flat and I go away feeling like a bit of a ditz.

It just happened again. My husband was laughing his head off over something he watched on Youtube with Conan O’Brien. He had to show it to me, as it was about skiing, and I used to ski, in another life.

So I watched it. The whole thing was about a minute and a half, and I didn’t find it funny at all. Hubby had to explain the two main aspects of the joke to me, and still I didn’t find it funny.

And he doesn’t ski, never has, and here he was laughing his head off about this ski thing, and I, who ski, didn’t find it funny at all.

When the joke is of an off color or sarcastic genre, its even worse. Sometimes I do get it, but find it offensive, so I pretend I don’t understand or that I don’t hear it. Once I did this, and the person telling the joke proceeded to retell his joke, explaining every little thing, embarrassing me even further.

Does that ever happen to you?

English Lesson: I don't get it.
